Moss Vest
Moss Vest
Nature does not disappear. It waits.
Constructed with preserved moss collected from a pathway in the Pacific Northwest, the Moss Vest explores the tension between human-made systems and the natural world that exists alongside them. The moss was carefully removed by hand, preserving the individual structures that allow it to grow together as a collective.
Inspired by moss emerging through pavement and across urban surfaces, the piece asks a simple question: whose territory is this? The city belongs to us, yet nature continues to participate in shaping it. Rather than presenting these forces as opposites, the garment captures a moment of coexistence between the environments we construct and the ecosystems that persist within them.
Collected from a moss-covered pathway near the water on Mercer Island, the material was hand-removed and individually secured to the garment. The process preserves both the physical texture of the moss and the relationship between the organic material and the pavement from which it emerged.
